Eleven people have been taken to hospital following an incident at the Poolbeg Incinerator.

The incident is being described as an “uncontrolled release” of lime and involved a breached pipe.

According to the Irish Independent, the breach occurred last night at about 10:45pm, when workers were dismantling scaffolding at the plant and were suddenly surrounded by a “small amount” of lime, which was accidentally released inside the flue gas treatment area.

Nine people have since been released while two people still remain in St. Vincent’s hospital.

An investigation team from Health and Safety Authority are on-site today to begin an examination of what exactly happened.
