fiodhna_hm

Summer is like the Sunday of the seasons, you can’t really call it a summer unless you completely waste it and start feeling really guilty around August.

This is how the majority of us are feeling right about now – but it’s not too late! We have one month to reclaim The Summer That Should Have Been, so we’ve rounded up 5 cool events on this August that you won’t want to miss!

1. Comic Con

Up to 16,000 are expected to attend this year’s event. Expect a sea of colourful and elaborate costumes as attendees in the biggest cosplay demonstration of the year. There is no better opportunity for people-watching as you try to spot your favourite characters among the crowd. The convention will be jam-packed with interactive sets, cutting-edge displays, original props and famous to keep everyone from die-hard comic book enthusiasts to ‘mainstream’ Marvel fans entertained.

Venue: The Convention Centre Dublin

Date: 8th – 9th August 2015

2. Prohibition Presents: Gatsby’s Mansion

This event caters to both romantic literature buffs and the more mainstream audience looking to play dress up for the day. Early-arrivals can catch a chauffeur up to the mansion and play a spot of bowls or croquet on the front lawn while sipping a tea-cup full of gin (with your pinky finger up, of course).

The fashion alone is reason enough to attend as the vintage dress code will ensure everyone looks like they stepped right out of the roaring twenties. Expect electro-swing DJs, fast-footed flappers and gambling tables for the true ballers. Tickets for this event are like gold dust so get ready to hustle!

Venue: Royal Hospital Kilmainham

Date: 15th August 2015

3. Indiana Jones Trilogy Marathon

Like the man himself once said “I think it’s time to ask yourself; what do you believe in?” The folks over at the Lighthouse clearly believe in 7 back to back hours of Harrison Ford in a Fedora, and we’re inclined to agree with them!

Venue: Lighthouse Cinema

Date: 22nd August 2015

4. Majestic Creatures: A Day & Night Gathering

With a bizarre myriad of activities from face painting and fortune telling to headdress and hula hoop workshops, this event has all the makings of a Bjork music video. There are multiple stages and an incredible variety of acts lined up, so no matter what your tastes there’s a little something for everyone! As the festival transitions from day to night, expect even more outrageous costumes and live performances unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Venue: Tivoli Theatre

5. Another Love Story

Following on from last year’s success, this weekend festival celebrating music, film and food brought to you by Happenings and Homebeat returns for another edition. The main event here being the extensive and eccentric line up of acts set to play over the weekend. They’ve pretty much catered to every possible type of person here with yoga, theatre and, oddly enough, even a library on site. Initially, I thought this was an ironically named stage but no, they did literally mean a library with actual books with actual pages in them.

Set against the backdrop of the ancient woodlands surrounding Killyon Manor it is sure to be a magical weekend and very family friendly. Fully-furnished glamping options also available for those of us that get a kick out of being the kind of person that ‘loves’ camping despite hating all the core aspects of it. Yay!

Venue: Killyon Manor, Meath

Date: 21st – 23rd August 2015
