Two festivals, the long-awaited James Dean biopic, and a real-life martial arts demo?

Wednesday 23rd September - Sunday 27th September. IFI Dublin.
Commencing last night with Steve McQueen doc The Man & Le Mans, the IFI Documentary Festival runs until Sunday evening, finishing up with the Irish premiere of Sean McAllister’s A Syrian Love Story.
It’s a stellar line-up, featuring legendary Albert Maysles’ final film In Transit, boxing doc Champs, and immigration tale I Am Dublin.
Friday sees Documentary Industry Day take place, a day of seminars, masterclasses and panels for documentary producers and directors, including special presentation from the makers of upcoming Panti-doc The Queen of Ireland. Pretty sweet few days for film lovers.

Renowned photographer and music video director Anton Corbijn returns to biopic territory for the first time since his Joy Division focused film debut, Control.
Life tracks the friendship between photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) and the young James Dean (A transformed Dane DeHaan), after Stock is assigned the shoot the rising Hollywood star for a profile. If anyone knows the psychology behind photography, it’s Corbijn – famed for his collaborations with U2, Depeche Mode and Arcade Fire amongst many others.
With a bumper cast also featuring Joel Edgerton and Ben Kingsley, this should prove to be a thoughtful, unique take on its fascinating subject.

Diff Pix return to Smithfield this weekend, bringing with them a fairly kickass selection of martial arts movies. Curated by none other than Roger Garcia, executive director of the Hong Kong Film Festival, the festival kicks off Friday at 4.30pm, with a live martial arts demonstration with Sensei Scott Langley and Hombu Dojo Karate.
Over the weekend, for only €11 a pop, you’ll have the chance to see action classics, featuring Bruce Lee in The Way of the Dragon, Jackie Chan in The Young Master and a special screening of cult ‘80s masterpiece Duel To Death, followed by an interview with Garcia himself.
