Credit where it’s due: the council is playing a blinder when it comes to celebrating Roddy Doyle’s Barrytown Trilogy.
The trilogy, which is this year’s selection for 1 City 1 Book, is made up of The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van – three books that have really made their mark on Dublin culture, and inspired films that did much the same.
Last week it was revealed that the Dart station in Kilbarrack – the Northside area that formed the inspiration for the trilogy’s setting – would be renamed Barrytown for the month of April.

But this week, they’ve gone even further with this plaque outside the Rotunda, commemorating it as the birthplace of The Snapper – the titular baby of the trilogy’s second novel.

In the words of the immortal Jimmy Rabbitte, that’s quite simply “A1”.
