The Minister for Transport, Mr Shane Ross, has recently stated that he would be in favour of motorists taking a refresher driving test to ensure that they’re up to date with all the rule changes on the roads, and haven’t accumulated bad habits.
According to the Irish Times, Ross revealed that an ideal system would be one where people would sit another driver theory test after an undisclosed period of time to keep up with their knowledge of the rules of the road.
The reason for these changes are due to the infrastructure of this country having advanced rapidly over the past 15 – 20 years, and the change in the motoring landscape having been dramatic through the construction of motorways.
Speaking in an interview with the Irish Times, Ross said:
“I think it is a real problem. Lots of people don’t keep up with the rules of the road and obviously don’t understand it. And there is no refresher test.”
Ross also stated that he will propose new laws to the Cabinet this afternoon. He is expecting to propose harsher punishments for any motorists caught under the influence of alcohol while driving.
