The introduction of rainbow-coloured pedestrian crossings in Dublin may be on the cards, in order to encourage LGBT tourism.
The brainchild of Dale McDermott, former president of Fine Gael's youth party branch, these 'rainbow walks' would bolster the international perception of Ireland as a "beacon of hope," following the success of the Marriage Equality referendum.
After being well received by fellow Fine Gael members, the idea is now being championed by councillor Noel Rock, who will make a formal proposal before the council. The councillor said:
Given the fact that Dublin is now viewed as a prime location for gay people, this will send a further signal that Dublin is welcoming to LGBT people all over the world. This would be good for tourism, good for culture and good for business.
The LGBT tourism industry in Ireland is set to boom following the referendum, and it's estimated to be worth a staggering €843 million a year to our economy.
Dublin wouldn't be the first to introduce these rainbow paths, as they can already be found in many cities around the world, such as London, Sydney and Stockholm.
If the proposal is accepted, it's hoped that these crossings will be in place before next year's 1916 celebrations.
