It’s not been the best week for Dublin councillor Noel Rock.
Last weekend, he was punched in the face in an attempted mugging while looking for a taxi – and today, he received a piece of hate mail that certainly ranks up there with the worst we’ve seen.

The letter was in relation to a sex shop in Drumcondra that was opposed by residents, due to its location in a residential area and opposite a school. Rock, who was recently selected as a Fine Gael candidate for the upcoming general election, got involved with the campaign on behalf of the concerned residents – and ultimately the shop did not open at the intended premises.
“This wasn’t an anti-sex shop campaign,” the councillor told Lovin Dublin. “100% of the residents were behind it, it wasn’t even a community-splitting issue.
“But we did see some comments online saying ‘Oh Catholic Ireland is alive and well’,” he added. “So I saw the handwriting and thought there’s something funny here.”
Rock, however, has taken the incident in his stride – an approach he’s also taken towards his assault over the weekend.
“I’m not the first politician to wake up with a sore jaw,” he said.
