Great Free Events To Check Out This January In Dublin

The-Comedy-Crunch

January can be a pretty tough month. With credit card bills to pay off and tax renewals awaiting, it tends to be the time when we go into hibernation mode in the hopes of saving a few bob here and there. Jaded by the excessive socialising of December, January is the time when it's okay to become a recluse and spend your evenings with a good book or box set. If the thoughts of a lonely, boring January is too much for you to bear, don't worry! There's loads of free events going on across Dublin from photography to art exhibitions, and comedy to science. So here's a list we've compiled of some cool, fun and free things to do to entertain yourself over the next few weeks.

Blood

The Science Gallery's most recent exhibition centres on the liquid of life which flows through our veins, blood. The exhibition comprises of twenty five pieces of work which explore blood in a symbolic and scientific way. While it's probably not great for the squeamish amongst you, they can always go grab a coffee in the café while you peruse the fascinating displays.

James Joyce: Apocalypse & Exile

Delve into the world of Joycean Dublin, with this exhibition at Marsh's Library at St. Patrick's Close. Joyce frequently used this library, and even upon entering the building you feel like you've stepped back in time. This exhibition details James Joyce's work, opinions and great wit, truly showing why he was the voice of a generation.

The Comedy Crunch at The Stags Head

What better way to beat the January blues than by breaking your arse laughing? The Stags Head hosts a free comedy night every Sunday and Monday night. With a rolling bill of stand-up comedians (you never know who might show up) and free ice-cream for audience members, it's a pretty perfect set up!

The Hennessy Portrait Exhibition

The National Gallery of Ireland is currently exhibiting the Hennessy Portrait Exhibition until the 8th February. This exhibition features stunning works from the 11 finalists and the winner of the prize, Nick Miller. The pieces of work are all contemporary portraits of different styles. It's easy to take our national gallery for granted, but every time we visit we ask ourselves why we don't pop in more often!
