Black Friday is almost upon us and it’s very tempting indeed to spend your cash on some of those ridiculously cheap deals.
But spare a thought for independent shops who simply don’t have the resources to get involved and slash prices in the same way.
Bob Johnston, who owns the Gutter Bookshops in Temple Bar in Dalkey, pointed out that most of them can’t afford to massively cut the prices of their products with Christmas looming.
Ok, as #BlackFriday frenzy starts, please remember that local independent shops can’t afford to half-price their stock right before Christmas. Try to keep a bit of money back to support local too – they pay taxes, employ staff & they make our towns nicer places to be! #ShopLocal pic.twitter.com/MwErPtOBTf

Tweeting from the Gutter Bookshop account, Bob said, ‘Ok, as Black Friday frenzy starts, please remember that local independent shops can’t afford to half-price their stock right before Christmas.
‘Try to keep a bit of money back to support local too – they pay taxes, employ staff & they make our towns nicer places to be!’
He also shared a longer list of great reasons to shop locally, including providing local jobs and wages, better community well-being and having a smaller environmental impact.
It’s something well worth keeping in mind in the run-up to Black Friday and Christmas.
