I was reading a food article earlier in the week when I spotted a piece about affogato. For those of you not familiar with this special treat it is essentially a simple Italian tradition of pouring espresso over ice cream. I’ve had loads of them in Italy but I’ve only ever seen one place that does them and that is Murphy’s Ice cream on Wicklow Street. With a serious craving and the heat cranking up there was only one thing I could do and that was mail Colin from 3FE and ask would he put one on the menu. He said he’d think about it and came back with this today…
I spent a long time scoffing at people putting anything other than milk or water in their coffee but the more I do this the more versatile I see great coffee can be. When you emailed me about it I was initially sceptical but then I decided it was at least worth a punt. Sourcing excellent ice cream was the most first thing and having our good friends at Murphys within walking distance made that one a no-brainer. Kieran recommended the vanilla to start off with and I was happy to work off his recommendation. After that we found that we need to dial the espresso in to suit the Affogato. Our traditional shots made it too sour and liquidy so we tweaked the extraction down by about 4-5% to a shorter shot that works really well with the ice-cream. We’re putting them on the menu for the weekend and if they’re a hit we’ll keep them going for the rest of the summer.
You can see the first one being tasted here in the shop. 3Fe have just started brunch which is getting rave reviews. This will be on the menu this week…
Pop down and see what all the fuss is about. I’ll be at the table next to you having 5 of these bad boys in a row!
