The proposed location and provider of Ireland’s first supervised injection centre is to be known before the end of October.
According to theJournal.ie, the HSE is currently seeking a provider to operate the 18-month pilot service in Dublin.
The facility will operate via a licence under the Misuse of Drugs (Supervised Injecting Facilities) Act 2017 and aims to:
- Reduce overdoses and drug-related death
- Reduce risk of needle-transmitted diseases
- Connect vulnerable drug-users with treatment, health and social services
The facility will be a “clean, safe, healthcare environment where people can inject drugs, obtained elsewhere, under the supervision of trained health professionals”, according to the HSE.
