evanmusgrave

While 1PM Sunday is destined to see pubs and living rooms across the country stuffed full of bodies cheering on the boys in green, that leaves a whole rake of hours free over the weekend for other activities.

We all know there’s nowt better to be devoting that time to than the pursuit of quality live music! To help you along the way we’ve compiled a list and introduction to the five best out there in the city this weekend.

This week we’ve got potent homegrown bands, a techno one-man myth, American indie rockers on the up, an esteemed electronic duo and a former Smith. Enjoy!

Friday

The Midnight Hour: Orchid Collective, We Were Giants @ Whelan’s

Whelan’s Midnight Hour gig series has firmly established itself as one of the best showcases of new Irish talent out there today, so it’s no surprise to see two groups with oodles of potential paired up for this Friday’s gig.

While Orchid Collective have only emerged in the last year, these guys bring a highly finessed set to suit their mature alt-folk songs – check out their mesmerising single “Figure It Out” below.

They will be joined by We Were Giants, a stirring live act with several tours under their belt who really know how to work a crowd.

Derrick May @ District 8

This guy is a true techno pioneer.

One of the legendary “Belleville Three”, May began his career in the Detroit scene where experimental producers first forged the variation of house that came to be known as techno.

May is best known for his early seminal track “Strings Of Life”, though his DJing skills and depth of electronic music knowledge make every moment of his sets a gripping experience.

Head on down to District 8 on Friday night to catch the legend in action.

Saturday

Speedy Ortiz @ Whelans

Speedy Ortiz are a supremely talented bunch with a very tight set, having been in the spotlight since their excellent 2012 EP, Sports.

Lead singer/guitarist Sadie Dupis’ charismatic presence and dense lyrics are perfectly complimented by the band’s cascading guitar and bass lines.

This bunch are most certainly en route to making a real name for themselves; be well advised to head to Whelans on Saturday to catch an intimate gig by big league rockers in the making!

Benoit & Sergio @ Opium Rooms

This French/US duo are experts in creating tunes marrying house music’s with a healthy lashing of warm, electronic pop.

With years of collaboration behind them now, these guys have cemented their place as a top drawer electronic live act, having picked up accolades on their live sets from the likes of iTunes (Breakthrough Electronic Artists of The Year) and Resident Advisor (Top 10 Live Act).

Sure to be a big atmosphere in Opium Rooms this Saturday for this one!

Sunday

Johnny Marr @ The Olympia

A verified guitar legend since the mid-80s, Marr has remained quite impressively culturally relevant over the years after The Smiths disbanded by teaming up with the likes of Modest Mouse and The Cribs.

The eminent guitar stylist has taken a solo route of late, scoring some notable successes.

Marr’s experience makes his live gigs a sure bet for a stunning musical encounter.

The grand setting of The Olympia Theatre additionally seems like a wonderful venue for this gig.
