Permission Has Been Granted For A New Luxury Hotel At Stephen’s Green

James Fenton

St. Stephen’s Green could be getting a new €40 million luxury hotel after Bórd Pleanála gave the green light for plans to convert Loreto Hall across from the city centre park.

According to The Journal, the building is set to become an 87-bedroom hotel despite appeals by the Department Of Foreign Affairs, which is housed in the building next door.

The Department requested that the appeals board refuse permission “in order that a more considered development of appropriate scale and form may take place”.

The issue of security was prominent among its concerns as its Iveagh House offices regularly hosts heads of State as well as national and foreign dignitaries and political leaders.

Loreto Hall was originally used as a hostel for young women attending the National University at nearby Earlsfort Terrace.
