Poke – The Next Big Healthy And Tasty Food Trend To Sweep Dublin

niallharbison

Food trends have a habit of sweeping in over Dublin and changing what we eat very quickly.

In recent times we’ve had the burrito, doughnuts, wings and the recent omni-presence of salad bars.

Most of these trends come from the US – what is hot in LA and New York generally hits our shores about 12-18 months later. You could almost set your watch on the timing of these trends.

The latest big thing that we’ll all be eating here before the end of 2017?

Poke (pronounced poh-kay).

A raw seafood salad that originates in Hawaii and which has taken over the health-conscious in New York, California and even Toronto.

The real beauty of the dish is it’s simplicity. It mostly features either salmon or tuna diced into cubes and served up as a cross between sashimi and a chopped salad.

There are hundreds of different variations that are served in small takeaway containers dotted with healthy ingredients such as seaweed, edamame beans and sesame seeds.

It will come dressed with soy, sesame oil, chili, lime or scallions and is often placed on top of rice with ripe avocado.

In short though, poke can be whatever the person serving it decides to make it look, and taste, like.

Why’s it going to trend globally?

  • It’s super healthy and full of good fats
  • Poke bowls ohotograph very well on Instagram (yes, really, that does shape trends)
  • Super easy to make once you have great, fresh produce
  • Fits into a lunch box or to go container perfectly and keeps well once chilled

You’ll start seeing this popping up in the coming months on existing Dublin menus in sushi joints and higher end restaurants replacing traditional tartare dishes.

The real trend will take off though when somebody opens their own poke place with the dishes sliced, seasoned, mixed and made right in front of you. I’d be stunned if a budding foodie entrepreneur isn’t already getting ready to do so here in Dublin.

I could take or leave most food trends myself but this is one I want to grow and establish itself long term here. Healthy, tasty, quick, affordable, addictive and, oh, so pretty.

Here it is being made from scratch:
