There comes a time over the holidays, when you reach saturation point. You've watched just about every Christmas film on tv, and the thoughts of eating yet another turkey and stuffing sandwich becomes too daunting. Your family, great as they are, are beginning to drive you round the bend, as the cabin fever of day 3 spent in close proximity with each other well and truly sets in. The melodies from the irritatingly noisy toys your nieces and nephews received from Santa keep playing round your head in a loop. You look for solace in the tin of Celebrations only to discover that nothing remains but an alarming amount of empty wrappers of your favourite, Galaxy Caramels… Right, it's time to leave the house.
There's so much going on around the city from Stephen's Day onwards, for anyone who makes a successful prison break from their house. Below is just a snapshot of all the fun you could be having, if you dare to remove yourself from the couch. So grab your coat and tell your parents you love them, it's about time you had some real fun.
Krystal Klear & Together Disco
The beauty of the Christmas season is that lots of our homegrown talent returns to Irish shores to visit their mammies. Disco aficionado Kystal Klear, who has just recently collaborated with Chic's Nile Rogers, will be back in the Big Smoke tonight. His uplifting and soulful tunes will ensure a night of joyful dancing at Opium Rooms for all.
The Building Society Stephen's Day Party
This is another great display of Irish talent, and a homecoming celebration for some. Frank Sweeney (aka Frank B) will be returning from the Big Apple to play a dj set in Dublin tonight for the first time in a good while. Kormac, Shane Linehan, RSCH 14, and a whole rake of others are also on the bill and will be sure to keep the Twisted Pepper bopping away til the wee hours.
Father Ted Night
This is a bit of a tradition in the Bernard Shaw on Stephen's Night, and sure why the feck not? It's free in, there'll be a Lovely Girls competition, as well as plenty of prizes and messing. The bonus of spending your evening in the Shaw is that whenever the drunken munchies set in, you need only amble over to the Big Blue Bus for some sustenance in the form of unreal pizzas. The dream.
Steffi & Virginia
Even if you can't face leaving your house on Stephen's Night, there's hope for you yet... The following night (27th December) Steffi & Virginia, two Berghain/Panorama Bar heavyweights, will be playing back to back in the Twisted Pepper for the evening. Their sets are an absolute delight, and this one promises to bring you back into society with a bang, following your Christmas hibernation.
