So, you thought it was hard to find a room to rent in Dublin, did you?
Thought that queuing around corners to view hot properties was degrading? Didn't like being asked to fill out a form covering your interests, and consenting in writing to vacate your property whenever your roommate had meetings of his secret club that you didn't know much about... but that you were pretty sure involved animal sacrifices?
Well, thank goodness you're not living in London. Because over there, what's on offer is in a different league altogether.
And no, we don't mean that in a good way.
Because do you know what £400 (€560) a month will get you in the distant suburb of Kingston-upon-Thames – some 10 miles from Charing Cross, so nearly twice the distance of borderline-rural Dublin suburbs like Knocklyon or Rathfarnham to O'Connell Bridge?
A bed. In a kitchen. In a flat that you share with two occupants.
The ad has been deleted from spareroom.co.uk, which might just have been because the advertisers were overwhelmed by shame – but is more likely because some poor unfortunate sod has jumped willingly at this offer, and is currently settling in for a nice nap on a pillow that smells of oil and garlic.
