Amid the hustle and bustle of St. Stephen's Green and Baggot Street lies Hume Street, a relatively short city centre walkway which may not be familiar to even the most clued-in of Dubliners. The former site of the skin care hospital which moved to St. Vincent's in 2006, the street is now made up mostly of offices.
Named after surgeon Sir Gustavus Hume, there are now calls being made to rename it 'John Hume Street' in honour of former politician John Hume, one of the key figures in the Northern Irish peace process.
According to Dublin Live, the motion was put forward by Robert Baker, who runs Baker Consultants Limited on the street, while Independent Councillor Mannix Flynn says that Mr. Hume's family are "100% behind it."
However, Labour's Dermot Lacey feels that renaming a street because of the coincidental nature of its name would be an insufficient tribute to Mr. Hume.
He said:
"I think it’s a tacky proposal. Half-renaming a street to honour one of the greatest Irishmen ever doesn’t seem sufficient.
"I think it’s only being done because of the strangely similar circumstance of his name."
