This Is What The Dublin St Patrick’s Day Parade Looked Like Back In 1938

If you head in to watch the parade tomorrow, you’re likely to be greeted with a sea of colour, activity, music, dance and sheer creativity. 

But in the fledgling Irish state – which was only one year on from severing the majority of its ties with the British Crown, as well as introducing the Constitution – things were a little bit different.

This archive footage from Pathé shows that the parades used to be decidedly more militaristic and less colourful affairs. And no, we’re not just saying that because the footage was shot in black and white…
