Sometimes you need to see what an outsider makes of Dublin in order to get some perspective on it — and it's always an interesting thing to behold.
That's precisely what you get when you watch the Dublin episode of American celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's documentary series The Layover.
In this programme the celebrity chef, who's known for his books, TV appearances and rock 'n' roll lifestyle, makes a 36-hour layover in a city and goes about trying to make the most of his time there.
Bourdain landed in Dublin in 2012, with this episode giving us a snapshot of the city in the year. It's interesting to see how the city has changed in those five years, how's remained the same, and what a no-nonsense visitor makes of the place.
Bourdain ends up hitting plenty of great Dublin spots during his trip: The Gravedigger's, Slattery's, The Cake Café, Bear, The Long Hall, The Winding Stair and The Chop House.
When evening rolls round, the chef even goes for a bit of a pub crawl on the Camden Mile where he falls in with a group of lads who end up introducing him to the local delicacy that is taco fries.
During the course of his visit he falls in love with coddle, full Irish breakfasts and proper pints of Guinness — despite the fact that he really tries not to say the word Guinness for legal reasons.
