Have you ever driven along the quays in Dublin, seen our naval ships and wondered why a tiny little neutral country needs a navy? Surely they weren't all required to prevent pesky fishing trawlers from Europe depleting our waters? Occasionally you'd hear of them getting a big drug haul off the coast of Ireland, but I always just assumed that was what the coast guard was for..
However, the past 4 weeks have set us straight. The LE Eithne was deployed to the Mediterranean to help with the ongoing migrant crisis. In that time they've picked up over 2,200 migrants and brought them to the safety of Italian ports. They have also been sharing videos on Youtube of their work as it happens. A small ship saving 2,200 lives in such a short space of time justifies every penny we have ever spent on our navy in my opinion, and the number of lives saved is sure to rise.
It's nice to know that we can still play an important role on the world stage, even as a small country. Recent years have shown insane amounts of budget cuts, with the government stripping back essential services and facilities here in Ireland, and I'm so glad the navy remained untouched so that they're able to complete humanitarian missions like this.
All these little things add up to us being the best country in the world, and this brilliant TED talk confirms just that. So on this lovely sunny day lets stop beating ourselves up over minor things - Ireland, you're doing great!
