7 Halloween Classics You Can Watch On The Big Screen This Month

seank

It’d wouldn’t be Halloween without the movies that go with it.

Luckily for us, some of the best All Hallow’s Eve flicks to ever grace the silver screen are being shown in cinemas around the city this spooky season.

We had a nose around to find some of the best on offer…

1. Edward Scissorhands

Where and when: Friday, Oct 28, Dublin Unitarian Church

Starring: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianna Wiest

Plot: A solitary man with scissors for hands is brought into a new community after years of loneliness. Things don’t run smoothly.

Our thoughts: Indulge in a bit of nostalgia as a young Johnny Depp features in his debut Tim Burton movie, back when it was still okay to like him

2. The Fly (first of a double bill)

Where and when: Friday, Oct 28, IFI

Starring: Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz

Plot: A brilliant scientist creates a machine for teleporting matter, but inadvertently splices his DNA with that of fly. Cue a slow, gruesome transformation…

Our thoughts: A must-see for true fans of Goldblum and vintage body horror flicks

3. Critters (second of a double bill)

Where and when: Friday, Oct 28, IFI

Starring: Dee Wallace, M Emmet Walsh, Billy Green Bush

Plot: A race of small, furry aliens invade a small farming town. Turns out their favourite food is people

Our thoughts: Kinda like a hardcore version of Gremlins

4. Scream

Where and when: Friday, Oct 28, The Sugar Club

Starring: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette

Plot: A ghost-masked killer is hunting down teenagers in a small town and the race is on for our heroine Sidney to find the killer before he finds her

Our thoughts: Part slasher, part comedy, this ’90s horror has great fun at the expense of its genre

5. The Shining

Where and when: Sun, Oct 30, The Light House Cinema

Starring: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd

Plot: A family is stuck in an isolated hotel for the winter, where the father finds himself driven to murder by the building’s ghostly inhabitants

Our thoughts: If you only watch one horror movie this Halloween, make it this masterpiece

6. Ghostbusters

Where and when: Sunday, Oct 30, The Sugar Club

Starring: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver

Plot: Three former parapsychology professors decide to set up a service as spectral exterminators. Inevitably, they have to save the world from a giant marshmallow monster. Ain’t it always the way

Our thoughts: Scrub from your mind this year’s lacklustre reboot by revisiting this Bill Murray gem

7. John Carpenter’s Halloween

Where and when: Monday, Oct 31, The Light House Cinema

Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence, Tony Moran

Plot: After six-year-old Michael Myers kills his own sister, he’s sent to a mental hospital for 15 years. When Myers escapes, he decides to return home and wreak some havoc.

Our thoughts: You know it’s an iconic Halloween movie when it’s named after the season itself
