A Petition Has Been Set Up To Build A Statue Of This Iconic ‘Star Trek’ Character In Dublin

James Fenton

You don’t have to be a Star Trek fan to be familiar with the work of Chief Miles O’Brien. The character first appeared in The Next Generation back in 1987 but will most likely be known to younger people as the subject of the gas Facebook page Roddy Doyle’s Star Trek.

If you don’t know it, basically Colm Meaney’s character from the show is given the Roddy Doyle treatment in a series of memes and the results are generally hilarious.

To honour the great man, a person named Alex Smyth has now set up a petition to build a statue of Chief O’Brien in our fair city. Sure why the hell wouldn’t we?

The appeal states that if it reaches its goal ‘it will be included in a proposal to Dublin City Council to commission an artist to make a statue of Star Trek’s Chief Miles O’Brien to be displayed on the streets of Dublin.’

At the time of writing it already has over 7oo signatures and only needs 1,000. You can add your name to the petition here.

Make it so.
