As part of our new weekly feature profiling different areas of Dublin, we decided that this week just had to be Dun Laoghaire given all the fantastic weather we’ve been having. Dun Laoghaire is one of my favourite spots to visit at the weekends when the sun is shining. On Sundays one of the best farmer’s markets in Dublin takes place in the People’s Park. On a hot day the queue outside Teddy’s for an ice-cream is lengthy, and the pier is buzzing with friends nattering and others taking their dogs for walks. The more brave will be seen jumping from the 40 foot into the icy water below. If you want to make the most of the day you can organise a sailing lesson from the Irish National Sailing School. Dun Laoghaire is just a great place at the weekends, especially when the sun in shining.
If you’re a food fanatic then the farmers market on Sundays is a must visit. I usually always order a hog box from The Goode Life stall and follow it with the epic brownies and chocolate fudges from the Truffle Fairy food stall. You can also stock up on organic veggies, fresh bread and beautiful meats at this market to set yourself up for the week ahead. There will often be a band or DJ playing in the park too, so bring a blanket and sit back and relax on the grass for a few hours. Our top food picks in Dun Laoghaire are:
- The Dun Laoghaire Farmers Market (based in the People’s Park)
- Harry’s Cafe for some of the best poached eggs in Dublin
- Toscana for a romantic dinner facing out onto the water
- Michie if you’re feeling in the mood for some sushi
- Cavistons restaurant and food emporium for beautiful fresh fish
- Teddy’s for ice-cream with the nostalgia factor
Have a look at our photo series below shot by our very talented photographer Derek Kennedy. Hopefully if you’re not already a regular visitor of the area, you might be persuaded to visit this weekend!
