A Perfectly Irish End To A Perfectly Irish Day

We’ve drank our beers, we’ve flown our flags, we’ve sung our songs and we’ve patted ourselves on the back at the spectacle of every landmark on the globe turning green.

It’s nearly time to revert to normal mode, whereby Irishness is treated like a mildly annoying sibling – something we love deep down, but really only tolerate because we have to. But first, let’s have one last hurray (sorry, hooley) at celebrating our national identity by tuning into the national broadcaster for one of the most cracking Irish films in recent years: The Guard.

The John Michael McDonagh film, which stars Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, tells the story of a small-town cop becoming embroiled in some big-time crime, and while it divided opinions on its release, it’s perfect viewing tonight as you bid goodbye to shamrocks, snakes and the colour green for another year.

The Guard, 9.35pm, RTÉ One
