Comic-lovers, rejoice! Today marks the release of a brand new series from DC Comics, All Star Batman, illustrated by Irish artist Declan Shalvey, along with his super talented American missus, Jordie Bellaire.
But how exactly did an Ennis lad end up illustrating comics for DC – and not only comics, in general, but All Star Batman, set to be one of DC’s best selling releases this year?!

Well, this isn’t Dec’s first rodeo – he’s been illustrating comics for around a decade, he says, “mainly for Marvel Comic drawing characters such as Deadpool, Moon Knight, Captain America and Punisher”.
All-Star Batman is his first “big project” for DC, although he previously worked on a Viking drama called Northlanders; it was there that he got to know editor Mark Doyle, who’s currently “the main editor on all Batman titles for DC.” So, basically, Declan knew a guy worth knowing – that’s pretty Irish!
The artwork for the series, says Declan, “is created by myself in Dublin with my girlfriend Jordie Bellaire, an Eisner Award winning colourist who also works on the main Batman series for DC.”
All Star Batman #1 is out today; it’s €4.99 and you’ll get it in all good comic book shops – think Sub City, Forbidden Planet, Big Bang Comics and Dublin City Comics.
Declan and Jordie will be at Big Bang Comics in Dundrum on Wednesday August 17 at 7pm doing signings of All Star Batman #1 – check out the event details here.
