I don’t know about you, but I genuinely find it difficult to watch live Irish television. It’s my overactive cringe reflex.
Any given episode of an Irish show is likely to contain at least one shudder-inducing moment.
Want a few examples of how bad it can get? Take a peek below, my friends…
1. When Pat Kenny tore up Toy Show tickets live on air
When one particularly snooty prize winner said she had no interest in tickets to the Toy Show, Pat may have overreacted a bit.
2. That time Brendan O’Connor interviewed Pussy Riot
With a name like that, that band was never gonna have a good time on imaginatively named The Saturday Night Show.
When the leader of this feminist punk rock band tried to talk about civil rights issues in her native Russia and the presenter tried to move her onto matters a bit more trivial, shit got awkward.
3. When Vincent Browne got a bit too sneery for Conor Lenihan’s liking
Vincent Browne likes to goad his guests hard at times. In this episode, he demanded to know why Conor Lenihan hadn’t handed in his resignation yet, but the politician was having none of it.
4. When Gay Byrne Interviewed a priestly Sinead O’Connor
Gay Byrne acted like Sinead O’Connor’s lovely old uncle in her first few appearances on The Late Late, but when she became ordained a priest with the Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church (which was actually rather unorthodox) she decided she had enough of being treated like a kid.
Skip to 3.15 for the turning point.
5. When Ryan Tubridy had an awkward moment with Sinead O’Connor
Classic Sinead. She loves making those Late Late hosts sweat.
6. Ryan Tubridy’s lamb carousel
This one left animal rights activists foaming at the mouths. But hey, it was worth it to make some quality television. Am I right?
7. Ray D’Arcy’s interview with ‘Jack Nicholson’
This was such a piss take. Even Ray looked annoyed at himself for doing it.
8. Ray D’Arcy’s interview with Dean Strang
Quizzing a respected and visibly uncomfortable lawyer on his newfound sex appeal? Sure what else would you ask him about, his life or career? Get real.
