With the first Wetherspoons in Dublin opened in Blackrock recently, and another one opening in Dun Laoghaire next month, it’s shouldn’t be much of a surprise to hear that the UK group are expanding further across the city with the purchase of Blanchardstown’s Light Nightclub.
Wetherspoons plan to invest millions into the club and reopen it as an enormous pub. While there is a lot to be said for competitive pricing, I wonder how long it will be before we start hearing about our local pubs having to close their doors as they’re undercut by Wetherspoons. What do you think, are Wetherspoons just a Tesco Value version of our traditional Irish pubs, that may wipe out our favourite local boozers? Or a welcome addition to the Irish nightlife scene that will keep our publicans honest?
