Sarah Finnan

Go solo or rally your WhatsApp group to root out their aprons and join you at one of Picado’s evening supper clubs.

Already have the dreaded end of summer blues? A trip into the newly refurbished Picado on South Richmond Street will sort you right out. Run by husband and wife duo Alan Foran and Lily Ramirez-Foran, Picado is Ireland’s leading boutique Mexican grocer and cookery school.

United by a shared passion for good food, travel and cooking, this is the place to go when you are in desperate need of spicing up your taste buds. Owner Lily comes from a long line of tortilla bakers, so rest assured that you’re in good hands.

The shop window is a treasure in itself, and I often find myself stopping to admire its colourful contents. Currently decked out with birthday cards and a giant avocado balloon (an ode to its recent fifth birthday celebrations) I have my eye on one of the fabulous Frida Kahlo carrier bags that usually grace the shopfront. Past displays even saw ‘El Bully’ Donald Trump make an appearance, alongside the message ‘build bridges, not walls’.

By day a vibrant grocer and pantry, by night a celebrated cookery school. The inside transforms into an intimate kitchen, welcoming wannabe chefs and Mexican culture enthusiasts alike.

Book into one of the evening cooking classes and you’ll learn the basics of authentic Mexican cuisine and, better yet, get to enjoy a sit down meal at the end! Bonus points that you can BYOB. Workshops are in hot demand though, so make sure to pre-book well in advance.
