This Just Got Real: A Major Irish Bookie Is Paying Out On A Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael Coalition
They've paid out a 'five-figure' sum, so there's no messing about here
It's fair to say that Irish politics has been shaken to its very core today.
With all tallies complete, and official declarations beginning to trickle through, we're still no clearer on what the makeup of the next government is going to be.
The most likely outcome is a Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael coalition – something that was previously so unthinkable that many pundits are having difficulty visualising it really happening. However the same can't be said for BoyleSports, who today opted to pay out on that eventuality.
According to PR exec Aoife Heffron:
"We have decided to put punters out of their misery in what is expected to be a gruelling wait for an inevitable result on the next Irish Government and paid out a five-figure sum on a Fine Gael/Fianna Fáil coalition to be the next Government.”
She added: "It undoubtedly has the potential to see BoyleSports getting it wrong, hence resulting in a double payout, should the outcome differ to a Fine Gael/Fianna Fáil coalition.
"However, at present, we are confident in our decision."
Obviously this has to be taken with a pinch of salt, as a play for publicity on a big sporting weekend. But a five-figure sum is not to be sniffed at, and there will no doubt be some real confidence backing up that decision.
We explained earlier on why a FF-FG coalition (or a coalition led by those parties) would be inherently unstable, and would more than likely result in a follow-up vote.
And with every passing hour, it looks more likely that this scenario will come to pass.
