This Fine Gael TD Was Reportedly Caught Stealing His Opponent's Leaflets – And Ended Up In A Garda Car

This election just gets weirder and weirder

The 2016 General Election hasn't been short on entertainment and sheer oddity – but this one really takes the biscuit.

James Bannon, Fine Gael TD for Longford-Westmeath, was reportedly 'being interviewed in a Garda car' after allegedly being caught stealing leaflets from his opponents.

The allegation was made by Sinn Féin candidate Paul Hogan, who wrote on Facebook:

I just caught James Bannon's team stealing my leaflets in Ballymahon and he made a run for a car when asked about it. His pockets were bolging with Sinn Fein literature. The dirty tricks group must be terrified of a Sinn Fein success in Longford/Westmeath. Coincidentally he also had labour leaflets in his car. The guards have just arrived.

Hogan later added, in a comment underneath the post:

James bannon is being interviewed in the Garda car now

Images were later posted by Facebook user Leon Walsh, which appeared to show Mr Bannon in the front seat of a Garda car – and later, "walking away from the scene".

With the way this election has been so far, you just never know...
