When it comes to icons of our city, they don't come much bigger than legendary musician Luke Kelly. A Dubliner in two senses of the word, Kelly grew up in the north inner city before finding fame as a founding member of the iconic folk group who went on to play in front of adoring audiences at home and abroad.

Since his death in 1984, the city has missed the raspy voice of a true singing legend but from next year fans will at least be able to show their appreciation by visiting a physical tribute to the star.

It has been confirmed that a bust of Kelly will be unveiled on Guild Street, near where he grew up at the end of January. Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke said that the statue has been 14 years in the making, and described it as "a sculpture piece of a head with the beard and the red curly hair and I have no doubt it's an emotional day for the family and the fans."

It was certainly a long time coming but it's great to see one of Dublin's most important entertainers finally immortalised in his beloved home city. No doubt plenty of glasses will be raised on the night.
