katedemolder

The Dáil has voted to effectively abolish water charges as of yesterday evening.

Dáil members voted 96 to 48 to accept the report of the Oireachtas committee on water services.

This report states that:

  • Charges should be abolished except for excessive use
  • There should be a referendum on public ownership
  • And meters are to be installed in all new builds.

The aforementioned report will now be considered by Minister Simon Coveney, who is to consult the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and the Department of Finance about the best way to deal with refunds to people who have already paid their water charges.
