Fianna Fáil leader and TD for Cork South Central, Micheál Martin has raised the findings of the Irish Rental Report in the Dáil chamber this morning.

He said that the rent hikes outlined in the report represent "extraordinary crisis".

Martin went on to explain that it's the largest rent increase ever recorded and that it is worsening the homelessness problem.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny was then asked by Martin what the government intends to do about the rent increases.

Kenny accepted the situation as "serious" and explained that the government has introduced measures to increase housing supply.

The discussion in the Dáil emerged from the statistics from the report which revealed an overall increase of 45% in rent since 2011 and an inflation of 11%.
