Todays see the long awaited launch of the new Garda Armed Support Unit, or ASU for short.
They are the elite unit of armed guards who will be on call 24/7 and who form part of the response to the gang killings that have been ongoing throughout 2016.
The new unit will be based in Dublin’s Harcourt Street and are fully operational as of today.
The force have been trained over the last few months and are being paid for out of the additional €55 of emergency funding that was introduced to help fight the increase in gang land crime.
We think you’ll agree that they look the part anyway. Best of luck to them in what will no doubt be an incredibly hard and risky job.
