On-street parking in Dublin city centre could rise by about 40% next year as Dublin City Council aims to regain the cost of running the coin collection service.
The Irish Times reports that the new rates would go from 90 cent in the suburbs to €4.15 in the city centre, where parking is currently €2.90 an hour.
The council say it is facing higher costs for the collection of coins from meters, and that although mobile phone payments are increasing, collecting the cash is pricey.
The number of parking places in the city has also decreased by about 6,000, with 750 spaces removed in the last two years alone to make way for Luas and Dublin Bike stations.
