Two Major Dublin Train Stations Are Closed Today

Kiara Keane

Take note if you’re planning on travelling via the city centre this weekend because two of Dublin’s busiest train stations are closed today (Saturday).

Tara Street and Pearse Stations will both remain closed today to facilitate major repairs to the 19th century roof of Pearse Station, taking place throughout a number of weekends over a period of 23 months.

Irish Rail has noted the following points:

  • DARTs will be operate between Howth/Malahide and Connolly; and between Grand Canal Dock and Greystones only
  • Tara St and Pearse Stations will be closed
  • Dublin Connolly/Rosslare Europort trains will have bus transfers between Connolly and Bray

Irish Rail explained on their website, ‘The roof structure, which dates from the 1880s, is in poor condition, and protective mesh netting has been in place in the station below roof level in recent years to protect customers and rail services, due to the corrosion which has occurred.

‘Its replacement has been identified by Iarnród Éireann as a crucial safety project.

‘While the roof is not a protected structure, Iarnród Éireann has specified that the external appearance and character of the structure should be maintained.

‘The project will cost €17 million and is funded by the National Transport Authority and will take place over a period of 23 months.’

The next weekend of works after this one will take place on April 13 and 14, so take note and plan your travels accordingly.
