9 Simple Middle-Eastern Dishes To Make At Home

Taking a nod from the haven of simple, delicious and healthy food that is The Middle East, we’ve only gone and whipped up a few easy, deadly dishes with just a handful of ingredients.

1. Falafel and cucumber sauce 

This handy recipe is perfect for a light, yet super tasty, summer dish – and is a deadly alternative to meat at a barbecue, for your less carnivorous of friends.

2. Kisir

Kisir is basically a Turkish dish made up of bulgur wheat, buttery chickpeas, assorted vegetables and fresh herbs. An ideal dish to make in bulk and serve as a side dish, or deadly lunch – Kisir is essentially a more filling tabbouleh. 

In addition to being delicious, it’s super healthy, high in both fibre and protein, rich in vitamins and minerals and low in fat and calories. What more could you want?

3. Dolmades

Dolmades refers to dishes made with either cabbage or vine leaves, stuffed with a delicious and flavoursome rice mix, shaped into little rolls and boiled until tender. 

This recipe is yet another stellar appetiser for vegetarians or vegans – but upon cooking, you’ll find even the most carnivorous of gourmands fighting for the last one!

4. Labneh

In Lebanon and Syria, Labneh is made by straining the liquid out of natural yoghurt, until it takes on a consistency similar to soft cheese. It has a tart, sour cream-esque taste, or heavy strained yogurt and is used as a common breakfast dip.

It’s delicious, so easily made and perfect eaten with olive oil, pita bread, and za’atar.

5. Baklava

Made with phyllo dough, nuts, and a simple syrup, this make-ahead dessert is light, moreish and perfect for entertaining. Tailor which nuts you use to whatever your guests prefer, and the meal will feel all the more tasty.

This particular recipe is crispy, nutty and extra syrupy – meaning that there’s something for everyone.

6. Kibbeh with lemon tahini

Kibbeh are traditional Arabian fried meatballs, made of bulgur wheat, minced onions, and finely ground lean beef, lamb, goat or camel meat with the Middle-Eastern spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and allspice. 

They’ve become increasingly popular globally due to their easy recipe and succulent taste.

7. Stuffed artichokes with meat and pine nuts

This super handy dish is quick, easy and delicious and a whole meal in itself. 

Served with rice pilaf, this is an ideal date night dish, dinner party whip-up or tasty Sunday lunch.

8. Kofta

The well-known and well-loved Turkish kofta are finely ground meat balls. Made with either beef or the traditional lamb, kofta is a more tender alternative to burgers and are wholly and utterly flavoursome.

9. Fasolia

Fasolia is a green bean and beef stew that is full of flavours, richness and will fill you up for the whole evening. Served with rice and Syrian salad on the side, this is an easy and healthy dish for your busier days.

Add a touch of chilli when you’re done, just to give it that extra little kick.
