Ingredients
  • Bananas
  • Dessert cream
  • Fresh vanilla pod
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Mixed nuts (walnuts, almonds and pecans ideally)
  • Butter
  • Dark chocolate

Banana split is one of those amazing desserts that take you right back to your youth. Just like strawberries and cream, or tomatoes and balsamic, this is one of those matches made in heaven that pretty much everybody likes.

The real beauty with this recipe is that from start to finish it will take less than 15 minutes to make, but the gorgeous flavours, various textures and sheer silkiness of it all make it the perfect dessert for everybody – from a small child through to a group of adults at a dinner party.

Grab some nice ripe bananas and give this a lash. You’ll absolutely love it…

Instructions

Step 1

The ingredients are really simple to find, but make sure to get fresh vanilla and not vanilla essence – trust me, it will make all the difference

Ingredients

Step 2

Start by roughly chopping the walnuts, pecans and almonds. You want to keep them coarse enough that they maintain their nice crunchy texture

Step 3

Slice the vanilla pod in half lengthways, then carefully remove the seeds from the middle of the pod using the back of a knife

2 Vanilla Pod

Step 4

Pour the cream into a bowl and add in the vanilla. The cream is ready to go as is and doesn’t need whipping or anything; just make sure the vanilla has been mixed through evenly

3 Cream Pouring

Step 5

Pop the chocolate into a bowl over a pot of gently simmering water.

4 Chocolate

Step 6

Add in your butter.

5 Butter

Step 7

Then, finally, add the sugar. The beauty here is that the sauce will effectively make itself. Be patient as it all melts, and at the end you’ll see it come together into a rich and delicious sauce.

Step 8

Slice the bananas into long think pieces and lay them on an oven tray. Dust them with sugar

7 Banana

Step 9

Place the tray of bananas under a hot grill and let them caramelise. This won’t take more than about 90 seconds, so keep an eye on them.

8 After Oven

Step 10

Finish by plating the dish, starting with bananas followed by sprinkled nuts, ice cream and then drizzled with the hot sauce and the cream.

Once you make this once you’ll be set with a recipe for life, which you can keep coming back to over and over again.

One of the classics with a few simple pimped-out upgrades – go and try it.
