Entering Knackeragua - The Best Bread In Dublin

I've been given plenty of stick for not reviewing the North Side of the city and I thought it was about time to change all that. With the fear of God in me I shaved off my beard leaving a tiny Movember style dirty tache, put on my grubbiest clothes and proceeded across the Ha'Penny Bridge with extreme caution hoping to somehow blend in. It only took me 50 yards for some heroin addict to ask for a cigarette but I think I bamboozeled them by replying that I was only over here to Instagram some food and couldn't help him with his current unfortunate predicament. So I was going to what has to be one of the streets with the most scumbags character in Dublin and which has been a trader's (drugs, cigarettes and fruit) paradise for as long as I can remember. I always remember it for having some of the cheapest meat in Dublin in proper butchers and a place with the best bread in the city...

It's called the Paris Bakery and from it's humble beginnings it has quickly morphed into a little foodie heaven that should be sitting somewhere just off Grafton street and not in what feels like a cross between 70s Dublin and downtown Kabul. Enough North side jokes. I love the character of the place and North side residents tend to get very annoyed and leave me nasty comments. I discovered this place when living in Smithfield and was delighted to find real bread in Dublin. I grew up on the continent with a bakery on every corner. Fresh bread here is sold in supermarkets and it tastes like ass. Bread made by individuals always tastes better than supermarket muck. The fact is we don't have enough local bakeries here in Ireland and that is part of the reason we are all eating fucking horse meat and god knows what else in the food chain. The reason this place is so good is because it is stuffed full of real French bakers and people who know what they are doing. If you've been poor like me and lived on a baguette and a glass of wine in France daily for weeks you'll appreciate the bread here. This is the real deal. They serve all sorts of dishes but I always wander over for a bowl of the gorgeous French Onion Soup and a simple sambo.

When bread is this good and crucially this fresh all you need to do is stick a slice of meat between it and a couple of salad leaves. Because our bread is so shite here in Ireland we end up having to make sandwiches like "triple deckers with melted cheese, bacon and dressing. Or whatever shite bagel Rachel Allen is trying to sell us. This is not trying to be anything it isn't...A bit of bread and a slice of ham. Savage. photo 2 

The place is always absolutely buzzing and they have doubled in size since I was last here. It's a full on bakery, great place for a coffee and they have a restaurant downstairs. Because of the street they are on they have 2 full time bouncers (with fluorescent jackets) and I can safely say that is the first time I have ever seen bouncers on a daytime bakery. The service was all over the place but in fairness it was 1 o'clock. The real reason I make the trip though is for the eclair (see cakes at the top). In Ireland we fill them with fucking cream which is a disgrace. These are the real deal with full fat creme patissiere and I always get mine to go so as I can walk down Moore street and just enjoy the madness. It's cheap, the food is great and although I wouldn't suggest you take your car or anything valuable along with you the trip to this Foodie heaven on the Northside is well worth it. Rumor has it there could be one coming to the south side as well soon but don't make the mistake of waiting head on over now and experience the best bread in Dublin.
