Attention Hungover Souls – We’ve Found The Ideal Soothing Spot For Brunch

Brunch can be stressful sometimes.. You could be too hungover to deal with humans that aren't the Dominos delivery man, maybe you forgot to make a booking, or maybe you're just dealing with waves of nausea constantly fearful that there could be vomit at any point.

Anyhow the point is: for hungover souls brunch should be easy, and the service should be swift. You shouldn't be scoffed at by a waiter asking if you've got a reservation, you should be seated quickly and your food should arrive as soon as possible. Also in terms of tunes at brunch, it depends how bad your headache is but I'm always more in favour of chilled enough music over banging techno or deep house in the middle of the day.

Last weekend, I popped out for a spot of brunch around 2pm on a Sunday fully aware that all the usual spots were going to be rammed.

So I took a chance on L'Gueuleton, and I was not disappointed. There were about 20 diners in the place, but it was an oasis of calm and friendly staff. We took a seat outside on the gorgeous long wooden seats and ordered drinks. We'd barely begun to chat when a Bloody Mary and Bellini appeared in front of us. Our waiter was super attentive offering to go get more Tabasco sauce if the Bloody Mary didn't have quite the kick required, even though it had just the right amount of spice.

I ordered the Poached Eggs Florentine which came with spinach, rocket and smoked salmon, and asked for it without bread explaining I was a coeliac. He responded quickly by saying 'Oh we can do it on gluten free bread, no problem!', which naturally made my heart sing - bread's the thing you miss most when cutting out gluten.

My sister ordered the Mexican Cornbread with chorizo, cheddar, mixed leaves and eggs. On the menu they're fried eggs, but once again our waiter said it was no issue to have them poached instead.

If we thought our drinks were fast, the food came even quicker. My dish was exactly what the hangover gods ordered, it had a generous portion of smoked salmon doused in a gorgeous hollandaise sauce, and plenty of spinach and rocket to fool you into thinking you're being slightly healthy. The gluten free bread didn't taste like sawdust which is always a plus.

The Mexican cornbread was cooked to perfection - it really moist and came with lashings of chorizo and cheese. There was only one other table of diners out on the terrace, and Fade Street only really seemed to be waking up so it almost felt like we had the whole place to ourselves, far far away from frantic brunchers and blaring music. Our only gripe was that the black pepper came in a little bowl, pre-grinded so was lacking in flavour, and fresh black pepper would have just finished both dishes off perfectly.
