One of the best things about #lovindublin is that it helps us discover great new spots all around the city. When we saw a few people posting drool inducing pictures of Tamarama on Aungier Street we knew it was a cafe we needed to check it out straight away. I’m pretty sure the owners are Australian given all the posts on their Facebook page about Australian sports stars and the fact that they serve up lamingtons- chocolate and coconut sponge cakes you rarely see served outside Australia. The cafe definitely reminded me of a few places I had visited when I was in Sydney, it has that chilled out vibe you get in the many healthy cafes dotting the city and coast serving up delicious lunches that you don’t need to feel guilty about.
We went in for lunch and got a few sandwiches, salads and coffee and were really impressed with everything we ordered. Their sandwiches were packed with fresh and tasty fillings and the bread rolls were delicious. I went for a roll with poached chicken, avocado and swiss cheese with a selection of side salads and it really hit the spot. Poached chicken can sometimes be hit or miss, but theirs was deliciously tender. It only cost €5.50 which I think is pretty good value for a sit down lunch. The two others I was eating with ordered a sausage sandwich and a ham and chicken wrap, they were equally impressed.
They also do fresh soups but it was such a hot day we decided to skip those, they look pretty good though. We’ll definitely be trying the soups out when the sun stops shining- hopefully not anytime soon.
The side salads that we got were pretty simple but really fresh and tasty, and it’s always nice to have a healthy extra to keep you going through the day. I went for a mix of their potato salad, beetroot salad and quinoa salad and they were all delicious. I’d be tempted to try a full salad there the next time I go, but the bread is so good I’m not sure I could pass on their sandwiches.
Our resident coffee drinker also declared the coffee as “one of the best cups of coffee he’s ever had”, in fact that’s the reason why we were going there in the first place. While we didn’t get any cake they had a great selection, and with coffee that good it would also be a great elevenses spot.
All in all, we were pretty damn impressed with Tamarama. It’s simple food done well, and all very healthy (well apart from the cake obviously) and at a reasonable price. We think we’ll be coming back again really soon.
