Food Coma Inducing Carvery On Stephen’s Green

We love trying out exciting new cafés and restaurants in the city, there is so much choice with cuisines from almost every part of the world available. However, despite all the exciting food choices being dished up every single day, sometimes if you're absolutely ravenous or hungover a carvery starts calling. While not exotic whatsoever, sometimes when it's raining and cold outside and you're needing some old-school comfort, only crispy roast potatoes drowning in gravy will do.

Sinnott's is a favourite Dublin pub and is always buzzing, especially when there are matches on. It's not really somewhere you'd think of going for lunch. However, when we were told that they're known for doing incredible carveries at a time when we were all on a come down after a long weekend, we decided to give it a visit. The smell of meat and gravy greeted us before we even got inside the door. 

Sinnotts offer a choice between two meats every day and then you can pick from all the many different sides of potatoes, veg and sauces. I went for the roast beef and the serving was colossal, two thick big pieces of beef with roast potatoes, stuffing, veg, gravy and... more roast potatoes! You can also get chips, mash, yorkshire puds and many different sauces. They're incredibly generous with portion sizes, when we asked for some more gravy we received an entire gravy boat!

The roast potatoes were incredible, so crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I could have eaten a full plate of roasties and gravy and been happy. The mashed potato, yorkshire puddings, gravy and sauces were delicious too. The disappointing downside was that the beef was very well done- I prefer mine juicy, pink and tender. I'm never really happy with beef unless I can see some blood run out of it, but to be fair the majority of their customers probably prefer theirs well done if that's the way the cook it. It was still tasty, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't how I would have liked it. Also the veg wasn't great, mainly down to the fact that there was so much cubed turnip... A vegetable that needs to be eradicated from the planet due to their intense smell of feet. However, I'm not really holding that against them as nobody orders a carvery in anticipation of the peas and turnip. The overall meal was very tasty though and we were all put into a sleepy food coma not long afterward. Despite not being ravenous for lunch I made a pretty valiant effort at finishing my plate.

This carvery does exactly what it says on the tin, it is somewhere to go if you want to have your dinner (a humungous dinner) at lunchtime. This isn't gastro pub food, it's just good pub grub. This is a place you need to hit up when you hungry and needing some nostalgic comfort food.
