Summer holidays are fantastic, don't get us wrong, but they can be fraught with embarrassment.

Be it from childhood days or recent memory, we all experienced awkward moments when we ventured outside our cultural comfort zones — and still shudder at the thought.

Let's take a look at some of the most cringy experiences all us Irish folk endure when out foreign...

1. Getting roasted on the first day

Due to being unpractised in its application, we're just not very good with suncream.

2. Accidental nudity

When you walk that fine line between wearing as few clothes as possible and being buck naked, you will inevitably cross it.

This usually occurs where you're trying wrap a towel around your modesty while ever-so-carefully manoeuvring on your underclothes. Wardrobe malfunctions ensue.

3. Awkward tan lines

Nothing ruins that radiant caramel look like a big ol' line of pasty whiteness.

4. Forgetting your swimwear

And wading shamefully into the pool in your tiny whities.

5. LOSING your swimwear

Little piece of advice: doing a massive cannonball in loose togs into a swimming pool is always a bad idea.

6. Having a travelling companion who THINKS they know the local language

When they're actually just doing an incredibly stereotypical accent.

7. The granddaddy of all fashion faux pas

You were either guilty of this as a young 'un, or you will be guilty of it as old timer: the socks 'n' sandals combo.

There is no greater shame than being associated with it.
