In completely random news that you were not expecting to hear, skateboarding will now qualify as an Olympic sport.

Described as ‘an essential feature of street culture’ this is sure to be of interest to the Tony Hawk aficionados amongst us.

Dating all the way back to the 1940s, skateboarding will only make its Olympic debut at the 2020 games in Tokyo. The International Olympic Committee has announced that five new sports will be added to the 2020 games, the other four being baseball/softball, karate, surfing, and sport climbing.

In light of this news, we’ve rounded up our top three skateparks in and around Dublin, so get out there and get practicing!

1. Bushy Park

Number one has to go to Bushy Park, Dublin City’s first public skatepark. The park itself is along the Dodder River, a lovely spot for a stroll if I do say so myself. Open to skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX bikes.

2. Greystones Skatepark

Head down to Shoreline Sports Park, Charlesland to find the largest skate park in the country. The park is built on a hill so is split into three different levels. Decked out with a banked driveway, a spine, a hipped quarter, a basic ledge set-up, a bowl and a ‘street’ section. Plenty of choice for beginners and pros.

3. Millennium Park

Out in Blanchardstown, this park has loads of space and is never too crowded so it’s the perfect place to go and work on your skills. Great playground too, for the kids…

Stick on some Avril Lavigne and get skating.
