WATCH: Leo Varadkar Had A Little Dig At Shamrock Rovers On The Six One News

James Fenton

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has been busy meeting with new Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez today and as is usual he’s been putting on the charm offensive.

Leo even learned that Sanchez studied English in Ireland as a teenager and he isn’t the first European leader to do so, as this article will attest.

While in Ireland, Sanchez also managed to catch a soccer game between Dublin side Shamrock Rovers and Manchester United, much to Leo’s delight.

However, while Varadkar was glad to learn of his counterpart’s sporting experiences in Ireland, he clearly isn’t a Rovers fan if this little comment caught on RTÉ’s Six One News is anything to go by…

“Shamrock Rovers aren’t exactly Real Madrid, are they?”

To be fair, Rovers record of zero European Cups doesn’t really stack up against the Spanish side’s record of 13, even if the former have won more League Of Ireland titles than anyone else.

With Leo hailing from the northside of the city, we’re going to assume he’s a Bohs fan then.
