DART Underground Could Be At Risk If This Building Is Demolished

Iarnród Éireann isn’t allowing plans for an office block off Pearse Street to go ahead, based around the fear that it would seriously jeopardise the anticipated Dart Underground project.

The Dart Underground is a proposed link from Heuston, Pearse, and the Docklands stations to Stephen’s Green via tunnel.

An unnamed developer is keen to demolish a warehouse built in the 1930s, located on Sandwith Street – an area considered a key location for the future metro. Irish Rail have stated that this would put plans for a Dart Underground at risk.

Speaking to 98FM, Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny had this to say about the proposed demolishing:

“Effectively (the site) would be the interchange point between the existing overhead line with the underground line at Pearse.

“It’s essential that whatever development goes ahead there takes account of that and doesn’t impede the project.”

Funding for the Dart Underground proposal hasn’t been committed as of right now – but it is mentioned in the Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy developed by the National Transport Authority.
