Leader Of Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro Has Died

Alana Laverty

Fidel Castro, Cuba’s former president and leader of the Communist revolution, has died aged 90, according to his brother, President Raul Castro.

“At 10:29 in the night, the chief commander of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, died,” he said.

During his time as president, Fidel Castro outlasted nine US presidents. He defied the US and built a communist state on its doorstep.

The US government spent more than $1 billion trying to kill, overcome and force Castro from power – to no success.

His brother Raul took over as president when Fidel became ill in 2006. It is believed his health has been deteriorating since then and he spent his final years in relative seclusion.

Castro’s remains will be cremated on Saturday, as per his wishes.
