WATCH: The Scenes In Temple Bar Last Night Were Like Paddy’s Day Times A Thousand

James Fenton

Given the amount of green and white in Temple Bar last night, anyone would have been forgiven for thinking Paddy’s Day had been brought forward by four months.

Of course, historians of our national holiday will know that it hasn’t been moved since the foot and mouth crisis of 2001 and the scenes last night were merely the result of a football match taking place 9,000 miles away.

Dublin’s Brazilian community were out in force to celebrate Palmeiras clinching the 10th League Championship in their history with a 1-0 victory over Vasco da Gama.

Supporter group Consulado Palmeiras Dublin shared the following clip to Twitter and it shows that fans weren’t going to let their triumphant moment go to waste despite watching on TV screens thousands of miles from home.

The post was captioned ‘Somewhere in Brazil? No, the other side of the world in Dublin, Ireland! We are Palmeiras!’

The Sao Paulo club has a large support base here in Dublin and fans regularly meet to watch matches in venues such as The Woolshed and Buskers On The Ball. Judging by the craic in the above video, there could be plenty of locals following their exploits from now on.
