Slice D7 And The Cake Cafe Are Hosting A Pop-Up With A Conscience Next Month

Now this is one for the diary…

The brains behind two of Dublin’s yummiest cafes are organising a food event called Our Table at The Project Arts Centre on 5 and 6 April from 12pm – 3pm.

The two day cafe pop-up is with a view to highlighting the plight of people seeking asylum in Ireland. Asylum seekers in Ireland are put into Direct Provision Centres for anything up to ten years, and in these centres people aren’t allow cook for themselves.

With this in mind, Michelle Darmody and her team have decided to organise an event where people have the chance to cook and to chat to the wider Irish public about their lives and to celebrate their home cuisine.

Our Table is a celebration of food traditions from a variety of countries. It is being organised to highlight the fact that people in direct provision are not allowed to cook for themselves and how that impacts on family and cultural identity. The aim is to show that there is a wealth of food knowledge being lost to the next generation.

It promises to be a fun two days with lots of different foods and entertainment. The menu will be devised and cooked each day by people in direct provision, and full lunch on the day can be booked here

People are encouraged to bring flowers from their garden, and pop in for a chat and a cup of tea and cake. There will be a suggested donation of €2.00 for the drinks but Our Table will mainly be a place where people can chat, interact and find out about more about direct provision.

Any funds raised on the day will go to cover costs of participants travel, the food and equipment needed with any excess going to the Refugee Council Of Ireland.

See you at The Project Arts Centre on 5 and 6 April!
