I tend to associate doughnuts with bad cop jokes and trips to America where I gorge on Krispy Kremes.
For the most part, doughnuts in Ireland have been really shit over the years. We’ve all eaten way too many stale versions in discount bags from convenience stores or supermarkets, and think of them as heavy, unhealthy and not especially appetising.
Burritos, Cupcakes And Now Doughnuts...
As I always say, you can pretty much find out what's going to happen here foodwise by looking to San Francisco or New York.
Trends kick off there before they move to London, and then about a year to 18 months later they arrive here. It happened with burritos, cupcakes, craft beer, fancy burgers and now – praise the Lord – it is happening with doughnuts.
Hilary Quinn is the genius behind the company, and I spoke to her this week about her inspiration behind the project.
"I was like all Irish students on a J1 in San Francisco when I saw the doughnuts there," she said. "I then worked in St John in London and decided to bring the idea back home – it's just myself at the moment but people seem to love them and I'm hoping to expand."
What makes these doughnuts so unique is their mind-blowing freshness, and the amazing flavours that she adds to them. Snickers, honeycomb and Oreo are just some that she has come up with, and the four flavours change weekly.
And while she's focused on coffee shops around town for now, she could one day open a shop.
So is this really the next big thing?
I firmly believe that high quality doughnuts are about to become a craze across the town, and you'll start spotting them on restaurant dessert menus (mini ones – as we saw recently at Box Burger), at events, parties, and pretty much every cafe across town.
Sounds great... but where can I get them today?
Hilary has been up early prepping the most delicious start to your weekend imaginable, and you'll find them in...
The sun was shining, the ribbon was cut, and the tarmac was freshly poured – all was ready to go when I queued up among plenty of eager visitors to be one of the first to try out Emerald Park’s two new roller coasters, Na Fianna Force and The Quest. The two rides are part […]
The problematic portal opened back up on North Earl this week, and although we’re glad to see at least one Dublin project come to fruition (unlike the ones below), it seems everyone is still scratching their heads trying to figure out why exactly we need it. Whether you’re a lover or a hater of the infamous […]

Newly opened up the top of Ranelagh, this high-end bakery is a great addition to Dublin’s blooming bakery scene. Operating on a refreshing level of production and efficiency, we have no doubt that it will set the tone and up the stakes for others. Get prepared to get there early cos they sell out lippy-split […]

Scéal have really come into their stride in their first permanent home. If you’ve been here a while, you know the Lovin team’s borderline obsession with a certain bakery, one you used to only be able to find on a Thursday or Saturday morning at the Fumbally stables, between 10am and 1pm (although they rarely […]
We found ourselves standing in a queue at 11am on a Wednesday morning, so we knew the hype was real. Dublin loves a trend, as we know. Burritos, doughnuts, chicken wangs, small plates – we’re always ready to hop on the hot sauce laden bandwagon, whether it’s for burgers, or dumplings, froyo, or pastel de […]
The definition of a “feel-good” watch. Somewhere Out There You by playwright and screenwriter Nancy Harris premiered as part of Dublin Theatre Festival and is on a 6 week run at the Abbey – I was lucky enough to catch it on Monday evening, and unlike most of the plays that I have had the […]
